QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED TO START THE COURSE

General qualifications for your chosen pathway (see What to study/LaSWAP pathways) plus

* 6 or above in biology or core science

* A good standard of performance in two sporting activities

* Evidence of competing regularly in at least one of the sports

* If PE is taken, a 6 or above is a good indicator

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Students taking physical education will attend additional compulsory sessions on Wednesday afternoons where the practical coursework is covered. This is the only time that practical work is carried out – the rest of the lessons are theoretical and are based in a classroom

LEARNING AND SKILLS

  • Learners will be equipped with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. This requires them to:

    * Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance

    * Understand how physiological and psychological states affect performance

    * Understand the key socio-cultural factors that influence people’s involvement in physical activity and sport

    * Understand the role of technology in physical activity and sport

    * Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance

    * Improve as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with curious and enquiring minds
